County Forests

SDG County Forests

There are more than 9,000 acres of County owned forest and wetlands in SDG. Our County forests (PDF) are open to public use and enjoyment. Many properties host trails, hunting, trapping, and other recreational uses.

The County Forests are managed in partnership with agencies such as South Nation Conservation, local ATV and snowmobile clubs, and organizations like the Friends of the Summerstown Trails. Our management plan includes sustainable timber harvests to improve forest health, encourage wildlife habitat, and generate revenue for forest management opportunities. Our forests are managed according to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification.

The SDG Community Forest has achieved Forest Stewardship Council ® (FSC®) certification through the Eastern Ontario Model Forest’s Forest Certification Program. To learn more about FSC Certification and the information available to the public and affected stakeholders, please see the Eastern Ontario Model Forest’s Forest Certification Program.

FSC® is an international, membership-based, non-profit organization that supports environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world's forests. For more information, on SDG's forest management activities and planning please contact the Counties Forestry Coordinator, Philip Duncan at pduncan@sdgcounties.ca
