William and Leah Brownell do some picking at the Avonmore Berry Farm.
AVONMORE, Ontario - The Avonmore Berry Farm is famous for its produce in SDG Counties, with residents from Iroquois to Alexandria diving into fresh fruit and vegetables.
Now the rest of the country knows too.
The venerable Avonmore institution was recently named by The Food Network as one of the top 10 best places in our country to pick strawberries. It's no wonder. In addition to some of the best-tasting strawberries in the land, the Avonmore Berry Farm produces something else in droves - smiles.
"We love the fact that when people visit the farm they often bring the entire family," said Megan Brownell, whose family owns and operates the farm, just a stone's throw north of Avonmore on County Road 15. "We have happy, friendly staff members who are always smiling when we get visitors."
It appears that not only are locals impressed, but so are those from afar. The Food Network notes that the Avonmore Berry Farm "is home to not only fresh fruits and vegetables (depending on the month it’s in season) but also children’s play areas, wagon rides and a pantry that houses homemade jams, freshly baked goods, snacks, drinks, ice cream and their ever so popular strawberry shortcake."
Megan said the farm is looking to open by mid-June. Already, wisps of red, from the tiny strawberry plants, are poking through the green of the fields.
"This is our busiest time of the year," said Megan, amidst the hustle and bustle of a farm that s just days away from opening for the season. "We can't wait to enjoy another successful season."
